Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston , 1972 World Series of Poker Main Event champion and four-time WSOP bracelet winner, died Sunday after a battle with cancer. He was 83.

In mid-April Preston was admitted to a hospice care facility in his hometown of Amarillo, Texas. His family released a statement Sunday afternoon confirming the poker legend’s passing.

“We hope everyone will remember our beloved Amarillo Slim for all the positive things he did for poker and to popularize his favorite game – Texas Hold’em,” the statement read.

LA Cafe Poker Room under new ownership

    22.05.12

The scene looks like something straight out of one of those Texas Hold ’Em tournaments that are so popular on TV: players around a table, putting on their best poker faces and carefully guarding their cards so no one else can tell what they have, the sounds of the room punctuated by the clacking of chips being stacked into piles and the soft swish of cards being dealt.

In this case, however, it’s all done for charity.

Students play poker at SIG recruitment event

    22.05.12

Instead of a classroom, a poker hall could be found in room 6115 of the Gates Hillman Complex on Thursday night. Carnegie Mellon students were treated to a poker tournament and free dinner courtesy of Susquehanna International Group (SIG), an international trading and investment firm.

The company, which is based in Philadelphia, has run this event before at several other colleges and universities, but this was its first tournament at Carnegie Mellon. SIG runs events such as the poker tournament in order to recruit college students with skills in mathematics and risk management to work for them.
