Coconut Creek mayor says the Isles behind lawsuits over Seminole hotel
Three residents have sued Coconut Creek over permission the city gave for a 1,000-room or bigger hotel at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.
City officials say those residents are pawns of the tribe's nearest casino competition, the Isle of Capri Casino & Racing in Pompano Beach.
A lawsuit filed by Barbara and Melvin Turcotte, was denied Wednesday in the 4th District Court of Appeals. A previous suit also filed by the Turcottes was denied in 2007. Two other cases, brought by Coconut Creek resident Marc Ripps, are pending in Broward County Court.

Comfy in Valley Forge: Gamblers have it good where Washington's troops once froze
VALLEY FORGE, Pa. -- Move over, George Washington. You, too, King of Prussia Mall shoppers. There's a new kid in town to compete for the thousands of travelers and tourists who flock to this busy, upscale suburban area each year.
A former conference center 20 miles west of Philadelphia has just been given new life as the Valley Forge Casino Resort, a small but noisy palace of buzzers, bells, flashing lights, one-armed bandits and tables for dice and other games.

ALPINE (CNS) - A 25-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening stab wounds to his arm and shoulder Saturday during a fight with another man at an Alpine hotel, sheriff's officials said.
Sheriff's deputies were called out to the Ayres Hotel in the 1200 block of Tavern Road just after 8 a.m., but the chain of events began earlier when the victim had met a woman at the Viejas Casino, according to sheriff's Lt. Jeff Maxin.

Cloverdale casino moves ahead
Plans for a casino-hotel resort in Cloverdale are back on track with an application by the Cloverdale Rancheria of Pomo Indians to take land into federal trust and clear the way for gambling.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs sent out formal notice last week of the tribe’s trust application for the 65 acres on the southern edge of Cloverdale, adjacent to Highway 101.

Race opens lots of eyes at Hollywood Casino
A variation of the Las Vegas Strip’s glitz and glamor comingled with NASCAR racing at Kansas Speedway for the first time Saturday during the Camping World Truck Series SFP 250.

Hollywood Casino opened on turn two Feb. 3, but the real test arrived with the first of two scheduled NASCAR weekends at the Kansas Speedway.

“Obviously, we built a casino to incorporate with the track and Kansas Speedway for these specific events,” said Steve Moberly, Hollywood Casino’s Director of Food and Beverage. “This is fantastic to finally get it here. We’ve been waiting for this race for a while.”

Most nights, the infield lights are on, allowing casino patrons to witness “a very iconic and beautiful view,” he said.

To Moberly’s delight, the initial race-day reviews were raves.

“We came here in the grandstands the first few years it was open, but I like this view for the race,” said Lansing resident Brandon Mohan, who watched from a private party in the Turn 2 Lounge. “Sitting here, it’s a great way to watch the race and see wrecks — like that.”

Mohan’s attention suddenly was diverted as Max Gresham slid into the wall in turn two on lap 57, crunching the No. 24 truck’s rear end before his eyes.

“Man, I like being close to the action,” Mohan said.

Girlfriend Lauren Ringel of Leavenworth had never watched a race at Kansas Speedway, but the action had her hooked as well.

“I have not been able to take my eyes off the track yet,” she said.

Not all of the casino’s employees are avid race fans either, but every one of them was eager to take in the sights and sounds.

“You’d come in every day thinking, ‘Come on,’ ” said Emma Copas, assistant manager at the Epic Buffet in the casino. “You see the racetrack every day, so it’s nice to actually see people out there and see the cars going around. There’s been a lot of anticipation.”

While the Turn 2 Lounge was host to a private party Saturday and will be again Sunday for the Sprint Cup STP 400, the buffet sits below the lounge and is open to the public. Patrons, however, are limited to an hour in an effort to discourage fans from sitting at a table throughout the race.

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Susan Clemons of Lecompton, Kan., who stopped at the buffet with three friends. “We didn’t even know about the race. We are actually heading to the Titanic exhibit downtown, but stopped here to eat. Now, I wish I knew how to get up there (to the Turn 2 Lounge) to watch it.”

That’s where Kent Courtney was.

He and his wife drove up from Valley Center, Kan., to spend a weekend at the casino and didn’t know NASCAR also was in town.

“When I got up here and heard it was race weekend, I thought, ‘Oh, boy,’ ” Courtney said.

Courtney, who planned to spend Saturday evening away from the casino to avoid the crush of race fans, even altered his gambling plans to watch James Buescher’s victory.

“You can’t beat this vantage point,” he said. “You can see probably anywhere that the grandstand can. It’s ideal, being on turn two and looking down the backstretch. I was surprised we were able to get so close.”

And he isn’t worried about returning on another race weekend. If anything, he’s eager for it.

“The hospitality here is unreal and the food is great, so we’ve had a great time and we plan on coming back,” Courtney said. “I wouldn’t even worry about coming on another race weekend as long as I can get a hotel that’s not too far away. I don’t want to drive 50 miles, but I think we’re going to consider coming back in October.”

Courtney’s wife was less impressed but still got sucked into the race momentarily.

“After about 15 or 20 laps it was enough for her,” Courtney said. “She went back to the casino floor.”

Still, other non-race fans seemed mesmerized by the spectacle.

Ringel and Clemons’ companion, John Sanders of Topeka, seemed to get bitten by the NASCAR bug — at least in that moment.

“I’ve never been a race here before,” Sanders said. “I go to the races at Heartland Park a lot, but I would like to come here for a race.”

Clemons quickly chimed in, “That’s going to be our next adventure. We got sucked right in. I think they are going to get casino-goers to start attending the races.”

Outside the lounge, most gamblers kept their attention on the roulette wheel, craps table or video poker machine, where their bets had been made. That, of course, was fine with casino officials, too. The casino had revenues in excess of $25 million through March, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

But all eyes at the restaurants with a view of the track were glued to the circling trucks.
