Plans to bring a $1 billion resort-style casino to the New England Patriots’ hometown have been suspended, Las Vegas casino developer Steve Wynn and the team’s owner said Tuesday.

The announcement by The Kraft Group and Wynn Resorts came a day after Foxborough voters elected two members to the local board of selectmen who opposed opening negotiations with Wynn.

He had planned to build the resort on land leased from Patriots owner Robert Kraft across from Gillette Stadium, the team’s home field.

Casino developer Steve Wynn abandoned plans Tuesday to build a Foxborough gambling resort on land owned by Robert Kraft, a decision that reshuffles the competition for the sole Greater Boston casino license by eliminating a top-tier competitor.

Wynn’s retreat - which leaves Suffolk Downs the leading contender in the Greater Boston region - was announced a day after anticasino candidates swept the Foxborough selectmen race. That vote marked the first ballot-box defeat for a would-be casino developer in Massachusetts.

With Atlantic City casino revenues down another five percent in March, despite warm weather and a couple of days of revenue from the new Revel Casino, the importance of the summer season is even more dramatic. The April revenue figures out later this week should give us a better feel for the impact of Revel on the overall revenue stream for Atlantic City’s casinos.

But before we know how much the April opening of Revel helped the bottom line, let’s remember that just because Revel boosts the overall figures doesn’t mean Atlantic City is cured.

That barrage isn’t letting up ahead of next Monday’s town election, in which the casino is the paramount issue in the race for two selectmen’s seats. Wynn is touting the thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in revenue he says the project will bring, dangling such perks as free child care for employees, a new hospital, and even an ice skating rink, if the Board of Selectmen — which has thus far rejected the notion — will say yes.
