The Avengers: Together at last
"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows," but these days, a guide through the seemingly endless flurry of pop culture is just what we need. With that in mind, here is what's on the radar screen in TV, music and film for the coming week.
MOVIES
Big release: The Avengers (May 4)
Big picture: The world's mightiest superheroes unite to battle an evil force bent on enslaving our planet. . . . No, not the sudden plague of British boy bands (though I'd pay good money to see The Hulk "smash" either One Direction or The Wanted). The big threat is the evil Norse god Loki and his many minions, but it hardly matters. The important thing is that The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Co., are together at last. Think of their previous solo films as little more than advertising for this Lycra-laden, big-budget extravaganza.

Raiders add four defensive players in draft, will take look at quarterback
The Raiders welcomed five new players Saturday to complete a six-man draft class, and general manager Reggie McKenzie conceded, "It remains to be seen how good they'll be, but we anxiously await their presence."
As for the impending signing of former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart as reported by ESPN, not so fast.
"We're bringing Matt in for a tryout," McKenzie said. "Signing and all of that, that's secondary. ... We want to take a closer look at him, watch him throw the ball and see how his injury has come around."

Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 NFL Draft: Ranking the Team's Top 5 Value Picks
After months of speculation and postulation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have put an end to all of the guesswork with a sensational performance at the 2012 NFL Draft .
While the team's moves in free agency had seen a logical (and predictable) stagnation, the Black and Gold were "Back and Bold" with their rookie selections.
With a staggering number of draft steals, the Steelers , along with their interstate brethren in Philadelphia , are widely considered to have secured one of the top draft classes in the NFL.

Janice Ann's Journal: Nerren clan marks Gene's 80th birthday
Those celebrating with Gene and Jo Ann were Matthew and Toni Nerren, of Corpus Christi, Michael and Barbara Nerren, of Rockwall, Richard and Marilyn Kay Troth, and their children, Michelle and Martin Troth of Columbus, Ohio. Michelle and Martin are attending Ohio State University.
Gene and Jo Ann plan to move to Corpus Christi live in their motor home, for a while, in a retirement community, on the bay, and enjoy traveling and the arrival of a new granddaughter. Matthew and Toni are expecting their first child in June. The Nerrens have been in Corpus Christi since December and have already made many new friends and found plenty of activities to enjoy, but Lufkin will always be missed.
