Is there an easy to remember strategy for beginner black jack players?

I've looked at the complex charts on when to hit and stay but they are very difficult to remember when I'm at the tables. Is there an easier formula?
If your cards are equal and less then 14 and the dealer is showing high cards, hit. If the dealer has low cards, chances are he'll go over. Just keep trying and use the strategy cards. Also, try and keep your eyes open on what cards have been dealt,
